Out of the Storm - Frontispiece

  1. OUT OF THE STORM: Frontispiece - A black ink drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. This drawing appears as the frontispiece in the book, "OUT OF THE STORM," by William Hope Hodgson, published by Donald Grant in 1975.

Following the publication of this book Grant sent me another Hodgson book to illustrate, titled, "Cargunka". I was excited about getting another Hodgson book to illustrate, until I began to read the manuscript . . .

To my utter dismay I immediately noticed on the first page that there were no puntuation marks, anyware! No Periods, no commas, no distinct sentences, no paragraphs, just words following words following words! Page after page, the entire 127 page manuscript was a flow of uninterrupted words! I thought, "What the hell is this"? It's unreadable!

I phoned Sam Moskowitz, the editor of these Hodgson books that Grant was publishing, and told him about this screwy "Cargunka" manuscript that I received. And would you believe it, he told me that there was no mistake, the book is a series of stories that Hodgson wrote in this unique manner. I told him the book needed to be edited to make it readable but he did not want to alter Hodgson's work. I turned down the commission, it was an absurdity! The book was never published by Grant. I'm still befuddled by this experience, and even though I saw Moskowitz many times at our ESFA social gatherings, we never talked about it. How strange is that!

I just checked the internet and found a book, "Cargunka and Poems and Anecdotes," by W.H. Hodgson published in 1914 by both, R. Harold Paget, NY, and by A.P. Watt & Son, London. It was the last Hodgson book published in his lifetime. But there was no information as to the "format" of the stories. I also found another website with descriptions of the Cargunka stories, but again, no data given as to publisher or format.
